Diving and Snorkelling in The Whitsundays

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority has been created to protect and preserve the largest and richest system of coral reefs in the world, so that the Reef can be used and enjoyed not only by us, but by by future generations.

The park includes The Whitsunday Islands, with their beautiful fringing coral reefs and their fascinating marine life. All bareboat charter companies in the Whitsunday area are required to collect $18.00 per person (marine park fee) which is paid to the GBRM Authority. This money is used to fund information, protection and monitoring services, as well as public moorings and reef protection markers in the sensitive areas such as Mantaray Bay, Butterfly Bay and Border Island.

Snorkeling is one of the most enjoyable activities you can do whilst on charter. We provide snorkelling equipment free for the whole family so everyone can experience the breathtaking color and variety of coral reefs and marine life. You are fitted out with mask, snorkel and fins by Aqua Dive (situated at Abel Point Marina) before boarding your vessel, ensuring your equipment fits and operates correctly (at no cost).

For the novice snorkeller, it's best to start in shallow water. The light and colors of the corals are brightest here also and as confidence is gained, you can venture out amongst the coral bombies and rock ledges to watch the colorful fish up close and explore this wonderful eco system at work.

Reefs are fragile and may be easily damaged. The best dive/snorkeling sites throughout the islands are being visited increasingly each year as tourists come in their hundreds to experience the wonders of this marine park.

Divers and snorkellers need to be conscious of good technique to prevent inadvertent damage to corals. The best way to appreciate the reef areas, is to look - not touch. Damage to coral by fins and scuba tanks can easily happen. Your briefer can show you the best spots to dive/snorkel - just ask!
